Case Study: Long Shaft Feeding for Centerless Grinding in Romania

Precision manufacturing demands seamless material handling. Recently, Elscint engineered and exported a specialized Auto-Loading Feeding System to a high-precision manufacturing facility in Romania. Designed specifically for long-length shafts, this system eliminates manual loading in the centerless grinding process.

The Challenge: Handling Variable Dimensions

The primary objective was to automate the feeding of shafts with a wide range of dimensions:

  • Lengths: 80 mm to 300 mm
  • Diameters: 6 mm to 30 mm

Handling these varying sizes requires a system that is both robust enough for industrial throughput and flexible enough for quick changeovers.

The Engineering Solution

The Elscint solution integrated heavy-duty mechanics with precision pneumatic controls to ensure a continuous, “hands-free” workflow.

1. Singularization & Lifting

The process begins on an inclined storage table where shafts are pre-aligned. A double-cylinder pneumatic lifting unit acts as the primary gatekeeper. These cylinders work in tandem to single out individual shafts from the batch, ensuring no jamming or double-feeding occurs.

2. Synchronized Conveying

Once singled out, the shafts are transferred to a high-speed belt conveyor. This conveyor acts as the bridge to the centerless grinding machine. To ensure the grinder is never starved or overloaded, synchronizing sensors monitor the flow, allowing the system to operate autonomously without manual intervention.

3. Precision Adjustments & Versatility

To accommodate the specific needs of the grinding process, the system includes:

  • X-Axis Adjustment (100 mm): This feature is critical during wheel dressing, allowing the operator to shift the feed line precisely as the grinding wheel diameter changes.
  • Height Adjustment (±50 mm): Provides the necessary vertical travel to align the center-line of various shaft diameters (6 mm to 30 mm) perfectly with the grinding orifice.
  • VFD-Controlled Speed: The conveyor utilizes a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD), allowing operators to fine-tune the feed rate to match the cycle time of the grinding machine.
