Innovative Usage of Vibratory Bowl Feeders – Feeding, orientating, conveying and singulating valve seats and valve guide

Elscint recently manufactured three bowl feeders for feeding of valve seats and valve guides. There were two valve seats, both having a diameter of dia 44 mm with the thickness of one being 5 mm and another 6 mm. Both required orientation with respect to one face. The difference was that the internal diameter had an inside 0.5 mm chamfer. Elscint could orient them as per the customer’s requirement. Elscint also made a poka yoke provision in each of the bowls which ensure that in case of loading of the valve seats in the wrong bowl, the same were rejected and taken out from the bowl itself. Thereafter, the valve seats were checked with the help of a pneumatic tool which checked not only whether the orientation was correct but also in case the other valve seat came forward. The rejection was done with the help of a three stage Festo make pneumatic cylinder. Thereafter, the valve seats were pneumatically pushed up four metres in height and then rolled down four metres in one direction to take them to the loading position. This ensured that the feeding system could be kept 4 metres away from the loading station. Thereafter, eight valve seats were kept ready for dispensing in the moving magazine of the customers handling system. The third component to be fed in this system was valve guide. Twenty four of these were required. The size of the valve guide was dia 8 mm x 47.5 mm length. These did not have any particular orientation so they were fed axially from the bowl feeder, pneumatically pushed up 6 metres with a Festo make cylinder and then taken forward 5 metres. At the end of the tube, a fixture was manufactured to ensure that the axially oriented valve guides were converted into rolling orientation and then a single valve guide was singulated and released into the moving magazine of the handler. The total equipment used 3 numbers of Model 400 bowl feeders with cast aluminium bowls with Elscinthane PU coating. Elscint proved the working of this equipment at its factory and then installed and commissioned the equipment at the customer’s site.
